If you’re a sole trader, have ever worked on-site or had a major contract, you’ll probably be well aware of commonly seen ‘contractual’ requirements to hold Public Liability insurance. but have you ever wondered ‘why the big deal?’

Put simply, Public Liability insurance is designed to protect you in the event a customer, supplier or a member of the public is injured or sustain property damage as a result of your negligent business activities.

Portal Equipment insurance (also known as General Property insurance) covers you for loss and damage to items of portable equipment associated with your business.  These can include tools of trade and items of stock

What’s typically covered*?

Loss or damage to portable equipment that is caused by:

  1. Fire, storm, water, explosion, impact or malicious damage
  2. Accidental damage
  3. Collision or overturning of the conveying vehicle
  4. Theft following forcible and violent entry to locked vehicles or locked buildings;
  5. Theft of equipment securely attached to a vehicle through the use of locks or padlocks

Specified portable equipment can include items such as:

  1. Mobile plant
  2. Photographic or video equipment
  3. Mobile communication equipment, including telephones and radios
  4. Electronic equipment, including computers, diaries, GPS units
  5. Accessories for the items listed above

What’s typically NOT covered*?

Loss or damage to your portable equipment that is caused by:

  1. Wear, tear or gradually developing conditions
  2. Cracking, scratching, marring or breakage of glass or fragile items or surfaces
  3. Rust, oxidation, mildew, mould, moths, insects, vermin, dry rot, contamination or pollution
  4. Any process of heating, drying, cleaning, dyeing or alteration to any insured item
  5. Faulty materials or workmanship
  6. Theft by employees
  7. Unexplained inventory shortage
